Abstract
Depuis un demi-siecle, le Quebec a pris position a un carrefour, face a deux solutions: l'assimilation ou l'independance. L'historien Maurice Seguin qualifiait jadis ces deux voies d'impossibles. Le temps lui donnera-t-il raison? Percue comme une histoire noire, sa reinterpretation rigoureuse de l'histoire des deux Canadas a permis de prendre la juste mesure d'une survivance dans la dependance. En rupture polie avec Groulx, Seguin a ete adule par des generations d'etudiants qui l'ont reconnu comme un veritable maitre. Puis l'histoire politique fut ecartee par de jeunes historiens qualifies de revisionnistes qui opterent pour une approche sociale et, aujourd'hui, par des postmodernes interesses surtout par la dimension culturelle. Est-ce a dire que Seguin etait soudainement depasse? Reunis lors d'un colloque tenu a Montreal en octobre 2005, quelques specialistes ont tente de mieux cerner Maurice Seguin comme theoricien de l'independance et penseur de la modernite quebecoise. Leur lucidite et leur enthousiasme meritaient d'etre diffuses. De toute evidence, Maurice Seguin n'a pas dit son dernier mot. Heureusement. Pour faire le point sur la pensee et l'influence de Maurice Seguin, Robert Comeau et Josiane Lavallee ont retenu, en plus de leurs propres textes, ceux de Michel Bock, Frederic Boily, Pierre Trepanier, Gilles Bourque, Eric Mechoulan, Denis Moniere, Pierre Tousignant, Michel Allard, Julien Goyette, Andree Ferretti, Real LaRochelle, Mathieu Bock-Cote et Sebastien Parent. L'editeur-historien Denis Vaugeois a signe la preface.
