Abstract
En las últimas décadas ha surgido un interés por los depósitos minerales encontrados en el lecho marino debido a la creciente demanda global de metales. Esto se debe al potencial de las mismas para suplir la futura escasez de las reservas minerales existentes en la corteza continental. Este artículo presenta información concerniente a los recursos minerales potenciales en el fondo marino ecuatoriano, los ambientes geológicos y geotectónicos propicios para su formación y un breve análisis vectorial de la posible ubicación de dichos recursos dentro del área de extensión de plataforma continental de Ecuador, con la aplicación del artículo 76 de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el derecho del mar. Se obtuvieron las áreas potenciales para los sulfuros polimetálicos, cortezas de ferromanganeso y nódulos polimetálicos de 100.756 km2, 26.775 km2 y 184 km2 respectivamente, las cuales se ubicaron en ciertas secciones de la cordillera del Carnegie, Coco y Colón.
