« Bxl’air bot » consiste en une application de monitoring de la qualité de l’air bruxellois réalisée en collaboration avec la rédaction d’Alter Échos, un magazine belge dédié aux actualités sociales. Cette application automatisée est à comprendre comme un objet du journalisme, dont la matérialité est assurée par des publications fondées sur une collecte en temps réel des données relatives à la pollution de l’air ambiant. Au-delà de ce cadre serviciel, elle est également à comprendre comme un outil du journalisme. En enregistrant chaque jour les données relatives aux mesures des polluants atmosphériques dans une base de données, cette dernière permet d’en retracer l’historique et de livrer une analyse statistique. Historique et analyse serviront de base à un projet, plus large, d’enquête journalistique couvrant une période d’un an. La problématique de la qualité de l’air à Bruxelles peut être ici considérée comme un problème public, lequel consiste en la transformation d’un fait social en enjeu de débat public et/ou d’intervention étatique. La quantification, dans le contexte d’un problème public, permet d’assurer une objectivation chiffrée d’une situation donnée. Cet article examine en quoi cette application est le résultat d’interactions entre technique et social, dans la perspective d’interroger les boîtes noires du journalisme et de la technologie.
