Abstract
Le Quebec moderne n’a jamais reellement habite la ville ; ou alors il n’a jamais habite la ville reelle. Peu importe, car cela ne l’a pas empeche d’en parler plus que de tout autre espace. Dans ce livre, je veux mesurer les consequences de cette contradiction. Je veux chercher a lire la ville contemporaine au Quebec, celle dont herite le jeune xxi e siecle… Mais si on souhaite poursuivre ici, il faudra accepter d’abandonner le mot “ville” en chemin. C’est l’urbanisation et la litterature qu’il faudra aborder comme deux choses interdependantes depuis les annees 1960 au Quebec. L’urbanisation et la ville ne sont pas la meme chose du tout. La premiere est un processus, la seconde est son resultat. L’urbanisation est vivante et mobile alors que la ville est morte, ou en tout cas figee, abstraite. Bref, l’une existe, et l’autre pas. Il y a la un probleme considerable. Dans ce livre, je parle d’etalement, de zonage, de friches, de banlieues, de chantiers et d’infrastructures — de ces espaces periurbains, depuis longtemps majoritaires dans le paysage nord-americain. J’en parle comme des lieux ou la vie devrait pouvoir acceder a l’art. Et plus specifiquement a l’art litteraire.
