But : Déterminer l’impact de chacun des éléments (le fluorure de sodium 2 % et le xylitol 10 %) et de leur combinaison sur le développement des caries dentaires chez les personnes âgées en perte d’autonomie. Design : Étude randomisée à double insu. Trois groupes d’étude égaux. Participants : 58 personnes âgées hébergées en perte d’autonomie au Québec. Interventions : Groupe #1 - brossage dentaire avec le gel au fluorure de sodium 2 % et au xylitol 10 %; groupe #2 - brossage dentaire avec le gel au fluorure de sodium 2 %; groupe #3 - brossage dentaire avec le gel au xylitol 10 %. Durée de l’étude – six mois. Variables : Taux de caries actives, arrêtées et la récidive de carie, l'indice de plaque Silness et Lӧe modifié, l'indice de saignement, le pH de la salive, la quantité de produits restant dans les seringues. Conclusion : Cette étude a permis de vérifier l’efficacité individuelle de chacun des produits utilisés et de la comparer à celle de l’utilisation des deux produits en combinaison. On a constaté que le xylitol 10 % était un ingrédient important. Le gel au xylitol 10 % avec le gel au fluorure de sodium 2 % et le xylitol 10 % seul ont démontré une efficacité très semblable. Par contre, le gel au fluorure de sodium 2 % seul a eu des résultats moins intéressants.
