Jusqu’à tout récemment, la plupart des francophones ignoraient l’existence à Montréal d’une littérature de langue yiddish. Dans cet article, l’auteur explique comment il a découvert les auteurs yiddish canadiens et comment il s’est mis à l’apprentissage de la langue pour traduire leurs oeuvres en français. Il s’attarde en particulier à la signification historique de ces écrits pour l’histoire de l’immigration à Montréal et décrit l’approche qu’il a employée pour réaliser ses premières traductions. Il s’arrête en particulier sur la figure de David Rome, l’archiviste du Congrès juif canadien qui lui a inspiré ses premiers efforts, et à l’oeuvre du poète montréalais Jacob-Isaac Segal qu’il a entrepris de traduire au début des années 1990. Ces travaux ont revêtu une signification symbolique particulière, car ils ouvraient la voie pour la première fois à une meilleure compréhension de la Grande Migration juive est-européenne du début du xx e siècle, et donnaient à lire un univers aux paramètres culturels très différents.
