Le syndrome pulmonaire à hantavirus est une maladie causée par l'inhalation d'excréments de souris sylvestres infectées.Au Canada, la majorité des cas de syndrome pulmonaire à hantavirus se manifestent dans les provinces de l'Ouest, soit la Colombie-Britannique, l'Alberta, la Saskatchewan et le Manitoba, et la principale cause de la maladie est le virus Sin Nombre.Un seul cas de syndrome pulmonaire à hantavirus a été documenté dans l'est du Canada (au Québec); toutefois, des souris sylvestres infectées par le virus Sin Nombre ont été repérées dans l'ensemble du pays.Bien que les cas soient rares (le nombre de cas par an varie de 0 à 13, et le nombre total de cas confirmés au Canada est actuellement de 109), le taux de mortalité chez les personnes infectées est d'environ 30 %. La majorité des cas surviennent au printemps et au début de l'été, ce qui indique que les facteurs de risque d'exposition virale sont liés aux saisons.En 2013 et en 2014, on a observé une importante augmentation du nombre de cas de syndrome pulmonaire à hantavirus; toutefois, la cause de cet accroissement n'est pas élucidée.Il n'existe actuellement aucun antiviral ni aucun vaccin, et le traitement en est un de soutien.L'éducation du public, la lutte contre les rongeurs et l'utilisation de mesures de protection individuelle sont essentielles afin d'éviter les infections chez les populations à risque.
