La philosophie de Leibniz au prisme de l’histoire intellectuelle chez Fontenelle et Jaucourt

Dans cet article nous nous intéressons à deux textes de la première moitié du 18 e siècle qui abordent l’œuvre de Leibniz. L’ Éloge de M. Leibnitz de Fontenelle, d’une part, (1717) et la Vie de Mr. Leibnitz (1734) écrite par Jaucourt, d’autre part, se présentent respectivement comme un éloge et une biographie historique. Nous nous posons la question de savoir comment ces types de discours participent à la construction d’interprétations de la philosophie de Leibniz. Pour ce faire, nous analysons le mécanisme textuel de la constellation d’auteurs. Nous montrons ainsi que l’éloge comme la biographie permettent d’intégrer et d’opposer Leibniz à différents groupes d’auteurs. C’est ce jeu d’intégration (première partie de l’article) et d’opposition (deuxième partie) qui fournit le cadre pour des interprétations de la philosophie de Leibniz. La façon dont les deux auteurs construisent l’histoire intellectuelle fournit ainsi le prisme à travers lequel la philosophie de Leibniz se réfracte. L’un des résultats principaux de ce travail est de montrer que Fontenelle et Jaucourt, par le genre de discours qu’ils adoptent, construisent la possibilité d’interprétations multiples de la philosophie leibnizienne. À cet égard, on doit considérer ce genre de textes comme des médiations participant à l’élaboration, au 18 e siècle, non pas d’un leibnizianisme, mais de plusieurs.
