Se situant dans un contexte marqué par des tentatives récurrentes de délégitimation de la sociologie, l’article cherche à fixer les réquisits d’une histoire de cette discipline pouvant nous aider à répondre aux interrogations insistantes qui se font entendre aujourd’hui au sujet de son rôle et de sa nature. À partir d’une lecture critique de l’ouvrage, récemment paru, de Marc Joly, La Révolution sociologique (2017), il cherche à dégager, sinon le sens intégral de la sociologie, du moins les conditions qui doivent présider à son appréhension rétrospective. Trois conclusions négatives émergent de cette lecture. La révolution introduite par la sociologie classique dans l’ordre moderne du savoir ne peut être ressaisie que si l’on dépasse l’épistémologie (1), pour prendre en compte les conflits sur le social (2), afin de généraliser sans dogmatisme vers une définition historique (3). En conclusion, deux critères positifs sont indiqués qui, venant répondre à ces contraintes, restituent à l’expression « révolution sociologique » sa valeur propre : (1) la relation interne avec la philosophie politique, sur le plan théorico-méthodologique et (2) le rapport constitutif avec le socialisme, sur le plan pratico-politique. Il s’agit aussi d’autant de repères dont on peut se servir pour saisir les sources de la crise actuelle de la sociologie comme ses possibles issues.
