Many people living with dementia are under-stimulated, socially isolated, and sedentary. This inactive lifestyle contributes to the prevalence of responsive behaviours (e.g., hitting), which may lead to overmedication and poor quality of life. Ambient Activity Technologies developed a wall-mounted interactive tool (called ABBY) designed for people with dementia. ABBY is available in the environment for easy access, and has been designed to augment existing programming by providing self-accessed, personalized interactions (e.g., favourite music, family photographs) at any time. In this presentation, we will discuss our iterative design process and present findings from a research evaluation on the effectiveness of ABBY in improving outcomes in people with dementia, their family members, and long-term care staff. ABBY was installed in six long-term care homes in Ontario, Canada, including five experimental locations (personalized ABBY content) and one control (generic content). Using a pretest-posttest, mixed-method approach, including quantitative scales and video recordings, we examined the impact of ABBY on residents (n = 27), family members (n = 18), and staff (n = 58). Data on a variety of well-being related outcomes were collected, including agitation, aggressiveness and quality of life in residents, strain and burnout in staff and visitor satisfaction in family members. After 3-months of using ABBY residents with dementia demonstrated a significant reduction in agitated behaviours, including physically non-aggressive (e.g., exit seeking, pacing), verbally non-aggressive (e.g., repetitive sentences or questions), and verbally aggressive behaviours (e.g., screaming). We also found significantly reduced paranoia, delusions, activity disturbances, aggressiveness, anxieties and phobias, as well as significantly improved quality of life. After one-month of usage, staff showed a reduction in burnout. Finally, the results suggest that ABBY can be a value-add for family members during visits with their loved ones in long term care homes. Through appropriately designed ambient technologies, the well-being of individuals living with dementia in long term care environments can be improved by providing engaging activities on a 24x7 basis. ABBY offers an easy-to-access tool for residents, staff and family members to facilitate meaningful interactions with individuals with dementia, and to alleviate some responsive behaviours.
