Cette étude tente de redéfinir la problématique des théories du complot, en cherchant à échapper aux pièges épistémologique et éthique que pose ce concept, s'il en est un. Un concept qui a pour principale fonction de faire exister une chose, afin de mieux la nier, au regard notamment de la science et du libéralisme. Une analyse du discours du complot a par conséquent été privilégiée, laquelle propose un élargissement du champ d'analyse, pouvant s'étendre à différents champs sociaux. Une approche qui a permis de localiser un certain rapport au complot à travers ces idéologies mêmes qui pourfendent les théories du complot. La théorie des discours de Jacques Lacan et certains concepts empruntés à Frederic Jameson et à George Simmel ont aussi permis de formaliser un nouveau cadre d'analyse, lequel s'est ensuite prêté à l'exercice d'une analyse terrain. Une étude de cas entourant l'introduction du compteur « intelligent », à travers l'analyse du documentaire Take Back Your Power : Investigating the "Smart" Grid et du vidéo amateur Compteur intelligent plan du NWO (Hydro-Québec), tente de soulever différentes manières de concevoir le discours du complot, en lien aux différents mathèmes que nous propose la théorie lacanienne des discours.
