Dans cet article nous présenterons les résultats d’une étude menée dans le cadre d’une recherche collaborative en Ontario. L’objectif était de caractériser les stratégies des élèves du préscolaire associées à une pensée algébrique relativement à la notion d’équivalence mathématique. Pour cela, nous avons proposé deux tâches à 36 élèves provenant de trois classes et analysé leurs stratégies. Nos résultats mettent en évidence 14 stratégies utilisées par les élèves pour travailler avec le concept d’équivalence; parmi celles-ci, trois faciliteraient la mise en place d’un raisonnement associé à une pensée algébrique. Notre recherche montre ainsi que les enfants peuvent raisonner sur la notion d’équivalence dans un sens relationnel, et cela dès le préscolaire, bien avant que l’algèbre formelle soit introduite.
