L'intendant fait partie de ces personnages que l'on croit connaitre du fait de leur omnipresence. Neanmoins, il subsiste une certaine confusion quant a la nature de son pouvoir: est-il un juge, un politicien, un administrateur? Meme s'il fut au coeur des evenements marquants du Regime francais, on en sait finalement peu sur l'exercice de ses fonctions, sur son «metier d'intendant», pour reprendre la celebre expression de Louis XIV. Quelles sont les tâches qui l'occupent concretement? Que nous revelent les documents produits par l'intendant sur sa pratique? Personnage cle de l'administration monarchique au XVIIIe siecle, l'intendant est le sujet ideal pour observer la portee reelle de ce regime sur le terrain, tant dans la metropole que dans la colonie. Comparer l'intendance au Canada, en Bretagne et a Tours permet de voir emerger les traits communs, mais aussi les disparites liees a la proximite ou a l'eloignement de Versailles. C'est toute l'histoire d'une institution qui se revele et, avec elle, les rapports entre gouvernants et gouvernes. Marie-Eve Ouellet est titulaire d'un doctorat en histoire, realise en cotutelle a l'Universite de Montreal et l'Universite Rennes 2. En parallele de ses recherches, elle a travaille sur de nombreux projets touchant le patrimoine de la region de Quebec. Apres avoir enseigne dans plusieurs universites quebecoises, elle est actuellement historienne et chargee de projets a la Commission de la capitale nationale du Quebec.
