Abstract
Longtemps considere comme une version edulcoree et tardive du courant europeen, le romantisme canadien fait ici l’objet d’une reevaluation complete. C’est un regard neuf, nourri par les recentes avancees de l’histoire litteraire et culturelle, qui est porte sur ce mouvement traditionnellement reduit a sa seule dimension esthetique, mais dont les impacts bouleversent tout l’ordre sociopolitique de la premiere moitie du XIXe siecle. Etroitement associe a l’« eveil des nationalites » qui bat son plein dans les grandes nations anglaise, allemande, francaise, americaine, tout comme dans les nations peripheriques italienne, polonaise, irlandaise, le romantisme joue a cette epoque un role capital dans l’emergence des identites et des litterature nationales. Dans les oeuvres de ces premiers intellectuels engages, empruntant la double posture romantique d’hommes de lettres et d’hommes d’Etat, se decouvrent des thematiques et une rhetorique indeniablement modernes, que la critique a trop souvent negligees. Remettant egalement en question plusieurs idees recues sur les annees 1860, percues a tort comme le veritable point d’ancrage du mouvement et qui en ont forge une image conservatrice et passeiste, ce reexamen montre qu’un premier romantisme, liberal et pleinement ancre dans l’actualite, a bel et bien ete importe et adapte au Canada des les annees 1830-1840.
