Abstract
Ru, che ha vinto il «Prix du Gouverneur Général» in Canada nel 2009 e il «Grand prix RTL-LIRE» 2010 in Francia, è il primo romanzo della scrittrice quebecchese di origine vietnamita Kim Thúy.Nata a Saigon nel 1968 da famiglia agiata, costretta a fuggire all'età di dieci anni, ha vissuto per un anno in condizioni tragiche in un campo di rifugiati in Malaysia, per approdare infine in Québec, dove vive stabilmente da trent'anni con l'interruzione di qualche soggiorno in Vietnam.Per dare il titolo al suo romanzo ha scelto una parola che esiste sia in lingua francese che vietnamita, con due significati che interagiscono per tracciare il profilo della storia: in vietnamita ru significa culla, cullare, mentre in francese indica un piccolo ruscello ma anche, come leggiamo in una frase esplicativa posta in guisa di introduzione: «au figuré "écoulement" (de larme, de sang, d'argent)», dunque il luogo d'origine agli inizi accogliente e l'abbandono verso l'altrove su acque povere e incerte.Superate le difficoltà materiali che incontra ogni membro di un popolo in fuga, Kim Thúy ha sentito il bisogno di raccontare la sua storia, non per fare opera letteraria, ma per tenere vivo il ricordo degli eventi e soprattutto dell'esperienza umana di coloro che li hanno vissuti dalla parte delle vittime, senza però mai indulgere a toni vittimistici.
