Abstract
AbstractIn his Memoires and Journal d’un voyage fait aux Indes Orientales, Challe uses his experience as a traveller and settler to detail his visionary attitude to France’s colonial presence in North America. He shows how the corruption of the French political system under the Sun King, combined with the lack of determination of the French colonial administration, put his country at a disadvantage compared with other European nations such as England and Holland. Although a fervent patriot, Challe expresses his admiration for the English and Dutch colonial policy and urges the French to follow in the footsteps of their rivals to ensure the survival of their last possessions in the New World.RésuméAyant visité l’essentiel des pays auxquels la France avait, en son temps, étendu son empire, Challe-voyageur laisse dans ses Mémoires et son Journal d’un voyage fait aux Indes Orientales une sorte de testament où il déplore les revers de la politique étrangère sous Louis XIV et où il intente un procès aux autorités politiques de l’Hexagone qu’il tient pour responsables de la perte de certains territoires d’outre-mer. Marqué par un passé peu glorieux et tourné vers l’avenir avec un optimisme hésitant, il incite les dirigeants de son pays à sauvegarder les dernières colonies en terre d’Amérique en suivant une politique coloniale calquée sur celle adoptée par certaines puissances européennes dont l’ennemi de toujours : l’Angleterre.
