L’article a pour objet d’examiner les idéologies linguistiques, plus particulièrement l’idéologie du standard, dans les textes de Louis Cornellier, de Christian Rioux et d’Antoine Robitaille, parus dans le quotidien Le Devoir entre 1990 et 2015. Le Devoir est considéré comme le journal des intellectuels, et les articles sur le français, tenus comme vrais et légitimes, font figure de discours d’autorité en la matière. À partir de l’examen de plus de 400 articles et en prenant pour cadre d’analyse les trois procédés sémiotiques (iconicité, récursivité et effacement) conçus par Judith Irvine et Susan Gal, l’auteure montre comment l’idéologie du standard traverse les textes, tout en se manifestant différemment selon le positionnement des chroniqueurs. Elle met l’accent sur la dimension historiographique, soit le parcours intellectuel des chroniqueurs, pour bien souligner que les opinions sur la langue se transforment au gré des événements politiques et sociaux d’une époque. La « déstandardisation » qui s’est opérée depuis les années 1960 au Canada français a entraîné avec elle une forme de « performance » de l’identité, processus qui met en scène les particularités linguistiques régionales, y compris les emprunts à l’anglais, ce qui ébranle les fondements sur lesquels s’est construite l’identité francophone au Canada depuis la fin du xix e siècle.
