La redaccion de Humanitas, abre este numero con este articulo de alta pertinencia en virtud de la coyuntura actual en que Mexico negocia con Estados Unidos y Canada la vigencia o suspension del Tratado de Libre Comercio entre estos paises (NAFTA). La autora pasa revista a las relaciones comerciales de Mexico desde fines del siglo XVIII con particular enfasis en el siglo XIX. Se enfatiza que desde la emergencia de Mexico como pais soberano partir de 1824, su vecino, Estados Unidos, busco la forma de firmar un acuerdo comercial. Se analiza el cambio ocurrido en ambos pases al final de siglo cuando existio consenso sobre aumentar el intercambio comercial y se nombro la comision negociadora encabezada por Matias Romero y Ulises Grant. A pesar de las muchas objeciones este tratado se firmo en 1883. Luego sobrevino la reaccion proteccionista en Estados Unidos con el famoso Arancel Mckinley. La autora critica que una nacion paladin del librecambismo, defendiera luego el proteccionismo. A contrapelo, el intercambio comercial crecio entre ambas naciones durante el periodo.
