Les notaires jouent un role primordial dans la societe canadienne-francaise du xixe siecle. Ces intellectuels adheraient aux ideaux de democratie et de liberte. Sur la scene politique, ils se font les critiques, grâce au parlementarisme, d'une constitution qui, a leurs yeux, fonctionne mal. Nombre d'entre eux participent aux evenements qui meneront aux Rebellions de 1837 et 1838, de la Chambre d'assemblee a l'insurrection armee.Des centaines de patriotes ont ete tues ou blesses au cours des diverses batailles qui ont marque cette periode. D'autres ont ete exiles, emprisonnes ou condamnes a mort. Douze patriotes du Bas-Canada ont ete pendus au Pied-du-Courant a Montreal. Parmi eux, quatre notaires: Joseph-Narcisse Cardinal, Pierre-Theophile Decoigne, Joseph Duquette et Francois-Marie-Thomas Chevalier de Lorimier. Tous les notaires n'etaient pas pour autant des patriotes. Le Bas-Canada comptait aussi des loyalistes et des neutres. C'est le parcours de tous ces notaires, quelle que soit leur allegeance, que l'auteur a voulu retracer.Ne a Quebec en 1929, Julien S. Mackay est notaire a Verdun depuis 1950. Il fait partie de la 5e generation de la famille Mackay a exercer cette profession au Quebec. M.Mackay a ete president de la Chambre des notaires du Quebec de 1975 a 1978, vice-president pour le Canada de l'Institut international d'histoire du notariat de Paris, president de la Fondation du notariat du Quebec et de la Societe de recherche historique Archiv-Histo.
