Engineering Instructor Use and Interpretation of Rubrics in a Large Scale Undergraduate Independent Research Course
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This work extends prior research into the efficacy and validity of rubrics designed for a large scale fourth year capstone course at the University of Toronto. In the context of this required course - in which projectsspan the gamut from industry-partnered design projects to research oriented theses - rubrics serve several important functions for students, supervisors and administrators. In this paper, we describe a set of interviews conducted with project supervisors (faculty) and the key findings based on these interviews. A number of interesting themes emerged, on the perceptions and use of the rubrics, views on thepurpose of the rubric, and on specifics of rubric design. The results of this work will support the development of a survey and, eventually, changes to rubric design anddeploymen

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
