Ce Carnet de Quebec propose une promenade en images et en mots au coeur de la ville. A l'incontournable Vieux-Quebec s'ajoutent les quartiers Saint-Roch, Saint-Sauveur et Saint-Jean-Baptiste.L'artiste multiplie les points de vue : plongees et contre-plongees, plans eloignes et plans rapproches. Il s'efforce d'epouser les mouvements et le regard du promeneur curieux qui leve la tete afin d'admirer un linteau sculpte ou une corniche, se rapproche pour contempler les details d'un mascaron sur une porte, recule pour observer a loisir un groupe de maisons. Jacques Martineau devoile ainsi a notre regard etonne les ensembles aussi bien que les details, souvent negliges mais o combien pittoresques et charmants. «Le citadin dans sa ville, comme le poisson dans l'eau, est trop occupe a vivre et a se deplacer dedans pour s'en emerveiller.Pour y arriver, il faut qu'il en sorte au moins mentalement pour essayer de la voir comme un espace sauvage, une terra incognita, un espace vierge a explorer et a cartographier. En somme, il doit entrer dans la peau de l'etranger. Autre condition : devenir pieton. Comme le dit encore Huxley, pour ?vraiment voir les choses, il faut se servir de ses jambes aussi bien que de ses yeux?.»Extrait de l'introduction Apres une carriere dans l'enseignement, Jacques Martineau se consacre maintenant au dessin et a l'ecriture. Il a deja collabore au magazine Nuit blanche et a publie Les 100 romans quebecois qu'il faut lire (Nota bene, 1994). Certains de ses textes ont parus dans la revue Nouaison (1998-2001) et, en 2008, il a participe a un ouvrage collectif en hommage a Robert Melancon (Le Noroit).
