Dans le contexte où les percées biotechnologiques et le croisement de modèles empruntés à l’informatique, l’ingénierie électronique et la chimie ont ouvert la voie à de nouvelles possibilités dans l’étude et la « fabrication » du vivant, nous avons entrepris un projet de recherche exploratoire visant l’analyse des positions conceptuelles, épistémologiques et pédagogiques d’enseignants de biologie au collégial (Québec). Nous avons d’abord cherché à savoir si les enseignants intégraient des enjeux entourant le vivant dans leurs classes et, si oui, selon quels objectifs et selon quelles modalités. Nous avons choisi un format d’enquête de focus group dans lequel nous avons présenté deux courtes vignettes, mettant en scène des questions liées aux biotechnologies comme leviers de discussions, à six enseignants participant à l’étude. Les transcriptions des échanges de deux focus groups ont fait l’objet d’une analyse qualitative de contenu. Les résultats montrent qu’ils abordent certains enjeux en classe, dont ceux liés à l’agroalimentaire qui font l’objet d’une initiative innovante. Les objectifs évoqués pour aborder les enjeux entourant le vivant sont en accord avec les stratégies pédagogiques que les participants mobilisent en classe. Ils évoquent des difficultés pour travailler selon une approche interdisciplinaire et soulèvent les contraintes liées aux programmes prescrits comme obstacle à l’intégration d’enjeux entourant le vivant en classe.
