Ce texte analyse les conditions politico-économiques à l’origine de la politique d’ouverture de la Commission des écoles protestantes du Grand Montréal (CEPGM) envers les immigrants entre 1864 et 1930. Après l’adoption d’un nouveau régime constitutionnel, en 1867, qui consacrait le statut minoritaire des protestants au Québec, les commissaires de la CEPGM ont cherché à intégrer tous les groupes non catholiques au sein de leurs écoles afin de contrer l’influence de l’Église catholique sur la scène scolaire montréalaise et d’angliciser une bonne partie de ces nouveaux Montréalais, réduisant par le fait même l’écart entre le nombre des francophones et des anglophones à Montréal. Pour réaliser ces objectifs, la CEPGM a dû mener une bataille de tous les instants pour obtenir du gouvernement la responsabilité légale d’instruire les enfants juifs et un nouveau partage de la taxe scolaire lui permettant de prendre en charge non seulement ces enfants mais également tous ceux des autres confessions religieuses. Cette analyse, qui met l’accent sur les mécanismes du financement des commissions scolaires montréalaises, examine sous un angle nouveau les rapports entre l’école publique et les immigrants.
