Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

EnglishAlthough there is a greater concern today and a growing number of research on vocabulary in the teaching-learning process of a foreign language, we will see that in practice this issue still presents many problems. This article will present a summary of a postdoctoral report at the University of Toronto, whose research focused on the methodologies, materials and evaluation methods used in the initial levels of ELE in that Canadian institution. At the beginning of the research, classes and tutorials were analyzed in which the main research object was what vocabulary to use and how it was taught to the students of that university. A questionnaire was then carried out, with a variety of responses from teachers and tutors, in which questions related exclusively to the topic of vocabulary teaching. The paper is based on the works of Folse (2004), Lewis (1993) and Nation (2013). The conclusions from this research show that there are many problems in the teaching of vocabulary even in renowned institutions such as that analyzed: one of them is that vocabulary is still a topic subordinate to grammar. Other problems, such as the lack of adequate planning of what words should be taught to students, and the more consistent methods of teaching and assessing them contribute significantly to the worsening situation

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
