Pour les vainqueurs du combat pour l'histoire depuis Lucien Febvre, une vérité intangible est que l'histoire chronologique, politique et batailleuse est l'ennemie.Foin des périodes trop clairement définies, articulées autour d'an nées voire de journées bien précises (l'ère chrétienne, la chute de l'Empire romain d'Occident, la découverte de l'Amérique, les États généraux de 1789, la Révolution russe ... ); foin des histoires de règnes ou de dynasties ou de républiques, exit les frontières dont on peut se demander qui les a inven tées; à la poubelle les hagiographies, les biographies de rois, d'usurpateurs, de conquérants; et ce qui va avec, histoire politique et histoires de guerre, les enfilades de grandes batailles, elles-mêmes moments déterminés ponctués d'exploits individuels remémorés pour le geste flamboyant, à la plus grande édification d'une postérité qui n'en veut plus.Viennent pourtant les remises en question.D'outrecuidants personnages qui se pensent historiens posent le politique comme central, et c'est le retour de l'histoire politique.Et maintenant l'impensable survient : la bête hideuse relève la tête, la bataille inhumée sans funérailles veut maintenant qu'on la commémore, que l'on en vienne aux acteurs des carnages, à ceux qui n'avaient même pas obtenu la satisfaction posthume de voir leur disparition historiographique justifiée.
