“Eine Klarheit in gedeckten Farben”: Colours of Despair in Herta Müller’s Narratives

Abstract
The present study investigates two chromatic attributes found in Herta Müller’s visual landscapes that help illustrate reluctant sentiments associated with the discourse of Heimat in her prose: colouration and light. Taking into consideration theoretical texts that reflect on the properties of light and colour, such as Walter Benjamin’s fragment entitled “Die Farbe vom Kinde aus betrachtet” (1914–15), as well as Wassily Kandinsky’s table of colour polarities from his work On the Spiritual in Art (1911–12), the aim of this study is to help expose the dark and livid conditions plaguing Müller’s characters in her narratives that take place in Romania, with a particular focus on her 1984 debut work Niederungen and her 1992 novel Der Fuchs war damals schon der Jäger. By focusing on the interdependent roles of colouration and light found in her works of fiction, this study also seeks to examine and indeed underline the overall importance of imagery in Müller’s oeuvre.
