Il volume contiene i sedici interventi dei partecipanti al primo convegno canadese interamente incentrato sui rapporti tra libertinaggio e letteratura, articolato in sessioni dedicate ad autori di primo piano (Molière, La Fontaine, La Mothe Le Vayer e Cyrano), alla relazione tra libertinaggio e generi letterari, e ai nessi tra libertinaggio, letteratura e società.Raccogliendo i frutti di una lunga stagione critica europea, i saggi qui riuniti sono accomunati dall'intento di approfondire il concetto di dissimulazione attraverso la riflessione sulle pratiche autoriali e sulle specificità del discorso libertino (su questo punto, rimandiamo agli ottimi lavori di Isabelle Moreau e dell'équipe dell'ENS di Lyon, già recensiti in questa rassegna), e di superare la dicotomia operata dal testo, fondativo ma in parte superato, di René Pintard tra libertinaggio erudito e di costumi.Il volume offre una gran varietà di spunti di ricerca, nel tentativo, non sempre riuscito, di uniformare gli sguardi letterario e filosofico sui testi libertini.
