Ce texte vise à présenter une démarche qui a été élaborée dans le cadre de l’Alliance de recherche universités-communautés intitulée Défis des communautés côtières de l’estuaire et du golfe du Saint-Laurent à l’heure des changements climatiques (ARUC-DCC). Nous décrivons la démarche de renforcement des capacités de résilience que nous avons tenue dans plusieurs localités côtières de l’Est canadien. Nos propos sont illustrés à partir de l’exemple des municipalités de Maria et de Bonaventure au Québec. Il s’agit d’une démarche basée sur la recherche-action participative. La coconstruction de stratégies d’adaptation qui en émerge repose sur un modèle d’exploration de la situation allant des aléas et de leurs effets, aux incertitudes de la connaissance et aux capacités des acteurs à agir. Ces milieux côtiers sont sujets aux aléas des changements climatiques dont notamment les inondations causées par les ondes de tempêtes, l’érosion côtière et les débordements de rivières. Il s’avère important, pour ces communautés, de mieux comprendre les enjeux associés à ces situations au moment d’élaborer des solutions collectives à long terme qui peuvent aller au-delà de leurs territoires. En fait, nous pensons qu’une telle approche pourrait être envisageable dans plusieurs autres régions rurales côtières de l’est du Canada.
