The implementation of the Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2016) in the province of Ontario has led to 121 closure recommendations by 2017 (People for Education, 2017). As these schools are scheduled to close, twenty-one new schools have been scheduled to open. These schools are expected receive the students displaced by the closures (People for Education, 2017). This study aims to conceptualize the phenomenon of school closures using the notion of “power geometry” (Massey, 2005). Despite its significance for the provision of, and access to, public education in Ontario, research on school closures is surprisingly scarce. Our review of the literature identified a few studies (n=12) conducted between 2000 and 2012. Aiming to revitalize the debate and scholarly interest in this phenomenon, this study aims to: 1. Propose a conceptual framework to investigate the phenomenon of school closures in the province of Ontario and invoking the novel consideration of the role of geographic space in this process; 2. Situate the phenomenon of school closures in the context of larger socio political processes in the province; 3. Identify other phenomena associated to school closures in Ontario.
