El Servicio Geologico Mexicano (SGM), a traves de la Direccion de Minerales Estrategicos, atendiendo los programas y proyectos del Programa de Desarrollo Minero del Gobierno Federal, implementa y desarrolla los trabajos exploratorios relacionados a la prospeccion y exploracion de los elementos de Tierras Raras (Escandio, Itrio, Lantano, Cerio, Praseodimio, Neodimio, Prometio, Samario, Europio, Gadolinio, Terbio, Disprosio, Holmio, Erbio, Tulio, Iterbio, Lutecio) y minerales asociados en el territorio nacional, con lo que se pretende revisar el potencial geologico de Mexico y que pueda figurar entre los paises productores de estos elementos estrategicos. Lo anterior deriva de la amplia demanda global de las Tierras Raras, que se ha incrementado significativamente durante decadas recientes, dadas sus aplicaciones cruciales en partes integrales de la tecnologia moderna, incluyendo usos en aleaciones, imanes, baterias y vidrio, como en la manufactura de computadoras, imanes, laser, pantallas y en la refinacion de petroleo como catalizadores. La sociedad debe saber que estos elementos estan a nuestro alrededor, no solo en la naturaleza sino en nuestra vida cotidiana, y estan presentes en cada vehiculo, computadora, smartphone, lampara fluorescente de bajo consumo de energia y TV a color; asi como en laser, lentes, ceramica y demas. Sus aplicaciones cientificas van desde la comprension de la procedencia de los magmas, rocas y sedimentos, hasta el estudio de estructuras corporales, tal es el caso de los estudios con la resonancia magnetica. Los depositos de Tierras Raras en rocas igneas principalmente (carbonatitas, rocas alcalinas, peralcalinas, pegmatitas, etc.), distribuidos en paises como China, Australia, Rusia, E.U., Canada, Brasil, entre otros, han jugado un papel importante en la creciente ofertademanda industrial desde los anos sesenta, donde se han obtenido minerales economico
