Abstract
Après bien des années à satisfaire les commandes militaires, Alcan s’est lancé plus systématiquement dans la transformation de l’aluminium après 1955. Ce faisant, le groupe a dû changer ses stratégies financières. Nul doute qu’après 1940 il n’a pas eu de soucis pour assurer ses investissements. Avec l’aide gouvernementale et la collaboration des milieux financiers nord-américains et britanniques, le groupe canadien a pu accroître ses immobilisations minières et électrolytiques. Dans le secteur de la transformation, cependant, il a dû porter plus d’attention au contrôle du capital de ses filiales, de même qu’aux actifs circulants. L’autofinancement était moins volumineux que dans le primaire, si bien que le groupe en a ressenti un malaise dès les années 1960, malaise qui l’a poussé à s’éloigner graduellement de la transformation. Était-ce pour le mieux ?
