En observant la manire dont les grands muses se dfinissent et se redfinissent aujourd'hui, nous pouvons dire que leur prestige et leur rputation semblent tre lis leur capacit d'adaptation aux enjeux conomiques amens, entre autres, par la mondialisation. Une des consquences de l'volution de leur statut est l'impossibilit de penser ces espaces uniquement en termes de lieux d'exposition. Ces derniers devienent mme des marques qui s'exportent comme le rcent Louvre Abu Dhabi et ils abritent dsormais des restaurants, des librairies, des boutiques, etc. Cette multiplicit dans l'offre pour un public largi semble tre galement le fruit d'une intgration progressive des ambitions commerciales au sein de l'espace musal. Or depuis les annes 1990, comme l'atteste l'ouvrage Le Muse transitoire, il existe un type de lieu qui assume parfaitement cette volution, savoir les concept stores, dont les plus notables, comme 10 Corso Como qui fait l'objet principal de l'analyse dans l'essai mentionn, runissent galerie d'art, htel, restaurant, espace de vente de vtements et d'objets. Initi par la galeriste et ditorialiste Carla Sozzani Milan, 10 Corso Como intresse les deux auteurs la fois pour son prestige, ses valeurs fondatrices mais galement pour son concept , dans le sens o il semble poser la question, entre autres, de ce que font ces concept stores la dfinition du muse traditionnel.
