Abstract
Background: The Scottish Society for Rheumatology (SSR) has collaborated with the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and Arthritis Care to develop a patient experience questionnaire for use in Scotland. Methods: All rheumatology teams in Scotland were invited to survey patients with established rheumatoid arthritis attending appointments between October 2017 and January 2018. Anonymised data was transcribed onto the Scottish Society of Rheumatology web-based audit platform. The survey addressed ten dimensions; needs and preferences, coordination of care, information education and self-care, daily living, emotional support, family and friends, access to care, review, work and overall experience. Results: 793 responses were received from 9 centres 78.9% of respondents strongly agreed that they were treated respectfully. 46% of respondents felt that their rheumatoid arthritis was being controlled enough to let them get on with daily life. 43% strongly agreed that they had been able to get help quickly in the event of a flare. 51% of respondents strongly agreed they have felt able to approach a member of their health team to discuss their condition and treatment. 42% of respondents strongly agreed that they have felt able to discuss personal or intimate issues about relationships with their health team. 94% of patients felt they had enough time during their consultation to discuss everything that they wanted to. Less than half of all patients felt they had been given the opportunity to attend a self-management programme. Conclusion: In general the results compare favourably with the Commissioning for Quality in Rheumatoid Arthritis (CQRA) data although self-management needs are still poorly addressed.
