Abstract
Le groupe suisse Holcim dispute aujourd’hui au français Lafarge le leadership mondial dans l’industrie cimentière. Fondée en 1912, la société Holderbank investit, entre-deux-guerres, d’abord en Europe, puis en Égypte, au Liban et en Afrique du Sud. Dans les années 1950 et 1960, le groupe s’implante en Amérique du Nord et en Amérique latine.Au cours des années 1970, le groupe Holderbank réalise ses premières joint-ventures dans les pays émergents de la zone Asie-Pacifique. Il se renforce en Europe, notamment en France. Durant les années 1980, Holderbank opère une percée en Europe orientale et, surtout, s’affirme désormais comme un leader mondial intégré verticalement. Les années 1990 se caractérisent par une stratégie de croissance centrée sur le cœur de métier du groupe : le ciment, le béton et les agrégats. L’amélioration sensible de la marge opérationnelle repose sur des gains de productivité élevés, l’expansion soutenue des ventes d’agrégats et de béton prêt à l’emploi et, surtout, l’entrée sur de nouveau marchés, en particulier en Asie. En 2001, le groupe a transformé sa raison sociale d’Holderbank Financière Glaris Ltd en Holcim Ltd. Présent dans plus de 70 pays, le groupe Holcim est leader mondial depuis les années 1970. Supplanté par Lafarge en 2001, Holcim a su résister à la menace d’une concurrence de plus en plus agressive, grâce à une gestion rigoureuse et à une stratégie mondiale.
