Mayn Lebns Rayze signifie Le periple de ma vie. Ce livre relate les memoires de Hirsch Wolofsky, un Juif polonais immigre a Montreal en 1900, il y a exactement un siecle. Publie a Montreal en yiddish en 1946, le texte a ete integralement traduit en francais par Pierre Anctil. Ce dernier anime depuis plusieurs annees l'Institut quebecois d'etudes sur la culture juive et le groupe Dialogue Saint-Urbain. Mayn Lebns Rayze a l'interet de constituer la premiere autobiographie complete ecrite par un Juif immigre lors de la vague migratoire est-europeenne du debut du XXe siecle a etre publiee en francais.Lorsqu'il debarque a Montreal, Hirsch Wolofsky bredouille quelques mots d'anglais et ignore tout de la vie au Canada. Il a cependant une idee tres precise de la facon dont la culture juive doit se perpetuer en Amerique. Au cours des annees suivant son arrivee, il participe activement a la formation d'un reseau institutionnel dans la communaute juive montrealaise, contribuant a y faire emerger une identite collective. Une de ses principales realisations est d'avoir lance en 1907 le premier journal yiddish d'envergure au Canada : le Keneder Odler. Les actions de Wolofsky ont jete les bases et oriente l'avenir de la communaute juive de Montreal. Le caractere contemporain de cette derniere en temoigne.« Mayn Lebns Rayze est le recit de l'apparition et du developpement de la communaute montrealaise d'origine est-europeenne et yiddishophone par un de ses principaux animateurs communautaires », resume Pierre Anctil. Ce pan de l'histoire des Juifs immigres a Montreal dans la premiere moitie du XXe siecle a de plus l'avantage d'etre vu de l'interieur. La communaute juive internationale y trouvera egalement un interet, car Wolofsky decrit de facon tres coloree son enfance en Pologne, de meme que ses voyages en Europe et en Palestine. Il en profite alors pour aborder des aspects meconnus de la vie juive entre les deux guerres, ce qui confere definitivement un caractere d'unicite a Mayn Lebns Rayze.
