La représentation de l’auteur de bande dessinée dans le champ muséal nous conduit inéluctablement à la question des représentations symboliques que le musée participe à construire et à diffuser auprès du public. Dans la littérature scientifique de ces dernières années, il est fréquent de rencontrer le modèle sociologique de l’artification appliqué à la bande dessinée. Ce modèle s’inscrivant dans le cadre théorique de l’institutionnalisation de la culture, il tend à déformer la bande dessinée pour la faire correspondre aux perceptions symboliques de l’art, de l’œuvre d’art et de l’artiste. Pour le dire autrement, les études sur les expositions de bandes dessinées tendent à poser un peu trop systématiquement la question du rapport à l’art. Cet article s’emploie à interroger les limites de ces perceptions symboliques en cherchant à retranscrire l’image donnée de l’auteur de bande dessinée dans les musées en respectant autant que possible ses complexités constitutives, ainsi que celles du champ muséal lui-même. Ce faisant, la conclusion nous amène à une dernière question : est-ce finalement l’auteur de bande dessinée qui devient artiste ou est-ce la notion même d’artiste qui évolue grâce à la reconnaissance sociale et culturelle de la bande dessinée ?
