La prolifération du phytoplancton entraînée par l'eutrophisation est un problème mondial dans de nombreuses masses d'eau continentales. La Baie Missisquoi, Canada, est une masse d'eau eutrophe qui connait souvent des proliférations de phytoplancton. Depuis les deux dernières décennies, des cyanobactéries dominent la biomasse phytoplanctonique dans la baie. La prolifération des cyanobactéries est probablement due à l'augmentation de la concentration de phosphore dans la baie. Pour comprendre les déterminants des proliférations des cyanobactéries des modèles numériques ont été appliqués. Deux modèles hydrodynamiques - écologiques ont été utilisés (DYRESM - CAEDYM et GOTM - ERGOM) pour simuler la prolifération des cyanobactéries dans la Baie Missisquoi en 2008 et 2011. Bien qu'il y ait des écarts dans les performances des deux modèles, les résultats ont montré que le phosphore est le nutriment limitant de la croissance des cyanobactéries. Ces écarts de performance varient selon les épisodes modélisés. DYRESM représente bien la variation du niveau d'eau de la baie. GOTM modélise mieux les processus de mélange, cependant, il ne fonctionne pas de façon satisfaisante lorsque les variations du niveau d'eau sont importantes. CAEDYM est un modèle écologique plus complet qu'ERGOM, toutefois, il a besoin de plus de données d'entrée qu'ERGOM. En l'absence de certaines données nécessaires, les résultats obtenus avec CAEDYM ne sont pas meilleurs qu'avec ERGOM. C'est par exemple le cas de la prolifération des cyanobactéries en 2008.
