Joseph A. Schumpeter tait un conomiste distingu, flamboyant, souvent arrogant, et d'une immense rudition. Les brillantes ncrologies qu'il a rdiges sur les conomistes de son temps, ses textes devenus des classiques en histoire de la pense conomique, sa profonde connaissance des dbats conomiques ou encore sa magistrale Histoire de l'analyse conomique publie par son pouse Elizabeth aprs sa mort, en tmoignent amplement. Mais Schumpeter tait avant tout un conomiste de grand talent qui s'tait donn pour ambition d'tre le plus grand conomiste au monde 1 , du moins de marquer de son empreinte la thorie conomique des cycles et du dveloppement et gagner ainsi le droit de figurer au Panthon des plus grands, ct des Ricardo, Marshall, Marx, Keynes et autres Walras, le plus grand des thoriciens .
