Diversos pesquisadores vm sugerindo o uso de glicerol e outros alcois como matria-prima para produo de bens de maior valor agregado e para gerao de energia eltrica, atravs de clulas a combustvel. Contudo, o sucesso dessas tecnologias de converso depende do desenvolvimento de catalisadores mais eficientes. Nesse aspecto, abordagens tericas se apresentam como ferramentas auxiliares, capazes de fornecer informaes difceis de serem acessadas experimentalmente e que so fundamentais para o projeto de materiais mais eficientes. Nesta tese, foram investigados, via teoria do funcional da densidade (DFT), o papel de defeitos de superfcie e efeitos de tenso na adsoro de alcois como metanol, etanol e glicerol, sobre superfcies Pt(111) contendo defeitos e ligas de Pt 3 Ni(111). Para melhorar a descrio dos sistemas de adsoro, foi adicionada a correo de disperso DFT-D3 abordagem da DFT. Atravs da dinmica molecular empregando o potencial ReaxFF, foram estudados os efeitos de temperatura sobre glicerol, em diversos nveis de recobrimento de superfcie, interagindo com os substratos Pt 3 Ni(111). Os resultados mostram que o glicerol se liga atravs do oxignio dos grupos hidrxi aos stios top de metais de transio (transition-metal, TM), orientando sua cadeia carbnica quase que totalmente paralela superfcie. Os clculos de energia de adsoro indicam que o glicerol interage mais fortemente com stios de baixa coordenao, presentes em superfcies com defeitos, o que pode ser compreendido por meio do modelo da banda d. Alm disso, a presena de mltiplos stios de baixa coordenao favorece configuraes onde o glicerol se liga superfcie por dois grupos hidrxi, um central e um terminal. Entretanto, existe uma clara preferncia de alcois se ligarem a stios de adsoro catinicos, indicando que a influncia de interaes Coulombianas um fator preponderante no processo de adsoro de alcois sobre TM. Anlises de densidade eletrnica dos sistemas adsorvidos sugerem que a adsoro promove perturbaes na densidade eletrnica dos alcois, como o deslocamento de densidade eletrnica das ligaes C-O e O-H para a regio de interao entre a molcula e o substrato, que esto associadas ao estiramento/enfraquecimento das ligaes C-O e O-H observados atravs de anlises estruturais
