El presente artículo es un análisis epistemológico e histórico del Movimiento Latinoamericano de Promoción de la Salud, que surge como alternativa al Movimiento Global de origen anglosajón promovido por los países industrializados, y defendido desde las agencias hegemónicas reunidas en Ottawa Canadá en 1986. Para ello se realiza una búsqueda bibliográfica desde las distintas propuestas del pensamiento latinoamericano de la Salud Colectiva, de los movimientos sociales de los pueblos, desde las ideas de pensadores de la talla de Edmundo Granda, Fals Borda, Paulo Freire; Nahomar Almeida Filho, Jaime Breilh; Pedro Castellanos, Asa Cristina Laurell, Juan Samaja y Consuelo Chapella. Se identificaron las fuentes documentales mediante una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica al interior del movimiento, identificando las fuentes originales de los autores latinoamericanos con una fuerte influencia del materialismo histórico. Desde el punto de vista metodológico se establece un dialogo interdiscursivo utilizando el análisis dialectico-hermenéutico en sus distintas fases. El estudio documental permitió concluir que es legítimo afirmar la existencia de un Movimiento Latinoamericano de Promoción de la Salud que históricamente es anterior al movimiento de Ottawa, surge como alternativa emancipadora del pensamiento tradicional lalondiano, estilodevidista, de mercado que responde al modelo de desarrollo mundial de la hegemonía positivista y desapoderante. El carácter disímbolo de la Promoción de la Salud, permite comprender las distintas promociones producto de un constructo que solo puede ser entendida en La Totalidad que representa la complejidad de su construcción y que quienes pretenden hacer promoción de la salud deberán estar conscientes de las relaciones de poder que implica esta acción.
