L'évolution parallèle (l'évolution répétée et indépendante de caractéristiques similaires dans des environnements similaires) est un sujet de recherche important en biologie évolutive, notamment parce qu'elle fournit des preuves que la sélection naturelle agit d'une façon déterministe. Cependant l'évolution non-parallèle (variation de la direction ou de l'ampleur des changements entre des paires ecotypiques) est observée de plus en plus fréquemment. Ici, je démontre que l'évolution non-parallèle est commune dans les études sur les poissons, mais qu'elle est aussi mal appréciée. Ce résultat motive mes autres chapitres, chacun enquêtant une cause potentielle de l'évolution non-parallèle chez une espèce de poisson différente. Premièrement, je démontre que la plasticité est un facteur important dans l'évolution parallèle des épinoches (Gasterosteus aculeatus) des lacs et des ruisseaux, en utilisant une expérience de jardin commun. En général, la plasticité augmente l'ampleur de l'évolution parallèle entres des lignées indépendantes. Par la suite, j'étudie l'évolution non-parallèle entre les sexes chez le saumon rouge (Oncorhynchus nerka) qui fraye sur les plages ou dans les ruisseaux. Mes résultats suggèrent que les différences entre les mâles et les femelles contribuent à l'évolution non-parallèle, à tel point que l'exclusion de l'un ou l'autre aurait conduit à des résultats différents. Finalement, j'étudie la contribution de l'histoire évolutive sur les phénotypes migratoires du saumon rose (O. gorbuscha), qui présente des lignées indépendantes dans des environnements communs. Je trouve que l'histoire évolutive ne contribue que très peu à la phénologie de migration, mais qu'elle provoque de l'évolution non-parallèle. En résumé, ma thèse souligne le fait que bien que l'évolution non-parallèle ne soit que rarement quantifiée, la recherche de ses causes pourrait améliorer notre compréhension du rôle déterministe de la sélection naturelle.
