Le but de ce travail de recherche est de mieux comprendre ce phénomène lié aux mécanismes d'écoulement d'eau et de migration d'air produits durant la saturation progressive du till compacté utilisé dans ces noyaux de barrages. Cette étude a été effectuée par le biais d'essais de perméabilité réalisés dans deux types de cellules conçues et fabriquées au Laboratoire de mécanique des sols de l'Université de Sherbrooke. Le premier type de cellule a servi à l'aide d'essais de perméabilités avec cycles de contrepression variant de 100 à 800 kPa à établir des lois de comportement hydraulique du matériau employé en permettant de dresser des relations entre la conductivité hydraulique (k), le degré de saturation (S) et la pression d'eau appliquée. Le second type de cellule, plus grandes et munies de capteurs de pressions, a permis d'étudier le déplacement du front de saturation sous une charge hydraulique de 100 kPa à l'amont par rapport à une pression atmosphérique à l'aval et d'en mesurer les effets sur la distribution des potentiels hydrauliques et des perméabilités dans des conditions d'écoulement semblables à celles que connaissent les noyaux de barrage en till. Aussi, les mécanismes d'infiltration d'eau, d'évolution des pressions interstitielles avec le volume d'eau circulé, ainsi que l'évolution des perméabilités moyennes et locales dans les échantillons de till ont été analysés.
