Abstract
Nous savons, en particulier grâce à son roman posthume et presque autobiographique Les enfances de Fanny, que Louis Dantin a entretenu des liens avec la communauté noire de Boston et qu’il a eu pour amante l’Afro-américaine Frances Maria Fields de 1922 à 1924, la « Fanny » dans son roman. Mais que savons-nous réellement sur ses relations avec les membres de cette communauté? Ou encore sur le rôle qu’il a pu jouer en ce qui concerne le journal tenu par le fils de Frances Maria, The Universal Bureau? Dantin était-il raciste, comme le prétendent George Elliott Clarke et Sébastien Joachim, ou au contraire était-il « en tout la tolérance même [, croyant] à l’égalité des races et que cette égalité est fondée sur le droit naturel », comme l’affirme son biographe Gabriel Nadeau? Nous répondrons à ces questions et, plus largement, nous jetterons la lumière sur le rôle de Dantin auprès de la communauté noire, montrant de cette manière l’« esprit universel » de celui qui souhaitait être inhumé auprès de Frances Maria. À cette fin, le roman Les enfances de Fanny constitue une source importante, mais moins que la correspondance qu’il a entretenue avec son amante et, surtout, Stanley Fields-Johnston.
