Depuis la Conférence de Bandung en 1955, une constante caractérise les gouvernements indiens et chinois : ils ont tous deux l’ambition de (re)devenir un acteur incontournable des relations internationales. Pour ce faire, l’Afrique est vue comme l’un des moyens pour accéder au statut de puissance internationale. Afin de comparer les actuelles présences chinoises et indiennes en Afrique, cet article se base sur des études de terrain et des recherches précédentes menées en Afrique de l’Ouest (relations sino-africaines), ainsi que des sources primaires comme secondaires (relations sino-africaines et indo-africaines). Sur le continent africain, le supposé retard indien vis-à-vis de la dynamique relation sino-africaine est appréhendé en termes économiques (investissements), commerciaux et culturels (leadership, diaspora, centres culturels ou accueil d’étudiants africains), puis politiques (aide au développement et coopération, réseaux d’ambassades, relations respectives) et institutionnels (forums de coopération). Ces facteurs peuvent permettre d’établir la potentielle marginalisation de l’Inde qui aurait ainsi laissé s’échapper Pékin dans cette « course à l’Afrique ». Dans ce lacis complexe de la mondialisation, la concurrence frontale étant peu viable, les autorités indiennes disposent néanmoins d’atouts qui seraient de nature à développer et pérenniser une politique africaine de l’Inde.
