Abstract
As the Australian Occupational Therapy Journal (AOTJ) moves to an online special issue covering Occupational Therapy Australia 28th National Conference and Exhibition, Conference Convenor Associate Professor Mandy Stanley and Scientific Committee Chair Justin Scanlan candidly shared their hopes for the 2019 conference. The Conference Convenor and the Chair of the Scientific Committee both spoke about the importance of making meaningful connections. They wish for delegates to maximise opportunities to network and meet with authors to find out more about their work. The spoke of the significance of extending connections they will make during the conference and create sustained relationships based on shared interest. They want delegates to translate knowledge into actions that will create an impact on their practice. The recommendations to connect with others and to translate new knowledge into actions resonates with the definition of knowledge translation (KT) put forward by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR, 2015) which describes KT as ‘a dynamic and iterative process that includes synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically sound application of knowledge to improve health’. This creates opportunities for delegates to become KT champions (Bennett, Whitehead, Eames, Fleming, Low, et al., 2016) within their organisations and services. Also, as Bennett, Laver and Clemson (2018) reported, conferences are a strategy of knowledge dissemination that national associations, like OTA, offer their members to improve the use of evidence in their practice. Finally, by creating opportunities to network and supporting sustained connections throughout and beyond the 2019 OTA conference, the Conference Convenor and the Chair of the Scientific Committee created a space for professional socialisation promoting professional resilience and strong professional identity (Ashby, Ryan, Gray & James, 2013).
