Abstract
La notion libertine du « moment » apparut chez Crébillon vers 1730, puis elle fut reprise, précisée ou infléchie au fil du siècle, jusque vers 1800, par Duclos, Dorat, Laclos, Denon et Mirabeau, entre autres. Or, ce concept fuyant, aux contours indécis, semble échapper aux définitions nettes. Cet article s’attarde à caractériser le moment libertin selon les termes mêmes des personnages romanesques qui le théorisent ou y recourent dans leurs entreprises amoureuses. Nous distinguons d’abord les notions voisines de « moment » et d’« occasion » ; nous exposons ensuite les sortes de moment ; puis nous en examinons les causes et les effets, tant physiologiques que psychiques ; enfin nous montrons le rôle paradoxal du moment dans la théorie libertine. En définitive, le moment marque la fracture entre l’esthétique mondaine et l’éthique guerrière, la tension entre le raffinement et la violence dans la séduction, et dissimule le plus souvent une domination sexuelle.
