Abstract
Moins traducteur et moins theoricien de la traduction que certains de ses contemporains, Paul Valery n'en fut pas moins seduit par l'idee de traduire certains textes qui lui tenaient a coeur et de reflechir au processus de la traduction. Et quand George Steiner dresse la liste, dans son important ouvrage Apres Babel, de ceux qui ont dit quelque chose de fondamental ou d'original sur la traduction, il n'inclut pas, curieusement, le nom de Gide, connu pourtant pour ses traductions de Shakespeare, Blake et Conrad, ainsi que pour ses ecrits sur la traduction comme sa« Lettre-Preface» a l'edition bilingue de Hamlet, pas plus que celui de Valery Larbaud, a la fois traducteur et theoricien, collaborateur de Valery a la revue Commerce, auteur du celebre Sous l'invocation de saint Jerome (1946), mais il inclut celui de Paul Valery:[...]
