L’opposition de la pédagogie traditionnelle et nouvelle, articulée dès la fin du XIXesiècle, a perduré dans la littérature scientifique tout au long du XXe siècle sous différentes opérationnalisations conceptuelles. Kirschner, Sweller et Clark (2006) présentent la version contemporaine de ce contentieux de façon dichotomique: ils confrontent les approches pédagogiques (socio)constructivistes minimalement guidées (apprentissage par la découverte) aux approches pédagogiques cognitivistes fortement guidées (enseignement explicite). Le présent exposé de position cerne les principaux arguments de cette dialectique et propose de dépasser la dichotomie suggérée. Les conclusions suivantes découlent de cet exercice : les pratiques pédagogiques (socio)constructivistes de découverte guidée sont plus efficaces que l’enseignement explicite exclusif. Les pratiques pédagogiques (socio)constructivistes non guidées, soit de «découverte pure», s’avèrent les moins efficaces. Les pratiques pédagogiques cognitivistes correspondant à l’enseignement explicite de savoirs issus de domaines spécifiques sont nécessaires, mais non suffisantes, leur efficacité diminuant à mesure que l’expertise des apprenants augmente.
