Cette étude avait pour objectif de déterminer si certains indicateurs de capital social propres à l’entrée dans l’adolescence (12 ans) et relevant de trois contextes de socialisation distincts, soit la famille (supervision parentale et qualité de la relation), les pairs (appréciation par le groupe et amitiés positives) et l’école (engagement scolaire) prédisent la participation électorale lors du passage à l'âge adulte chez des jeunes québécois issus de la classe moyenne. La première phase de cette étude a eu lieu en 2001 auprès de 390 élèves de 6e année. La seconde phase s’est déroulée en avril 2009 alors que ces mêmes participants étaient âgés de 20 ans. Ils devaient indiquer s’ils avaient voté ou non à l’élection fédérale du 14 octobre 2008. Des régressions logistiques univariées ont révélé que les jeunes qui présentaient un meilleur engagement scolaire et qui bénéficiaient d’une supervision parentale plus étroite à 12 ans étaient plus susceptibles de voter à 20 ans. Dans un modèle multivarié final, seule la supervision parentale demeurait significative. Ainsi, il semble que la famille joue un rôle particulièrement important en matière de socialisation politique précoce.
