Marcher en milieu urbain lorsqu’on est âgé n’est pas toujours simple ni sécuritaire. Bien que ce sujet ait fait l’objet de nombreux travaux récemment, peu ont été menés dans les villes situées en régions éloignées. Cet article répond à cette lacune en examinant l’influence de l’environnement bâti sur les espaces d’action piétonniers d’aînés habitant à Rouyn-Noranda. Deux collectes de données complémentaires ont été réalisées : des entretiens et une évaluation de la marchabilité (par une grille d’audit adaptée aux besoins des aînés) ont permis de cartographier et de connaître l’environnement de marche d’un groupe de piétons âgés vivant à Rouyn. Les résultats démontrent que les piétons âgés souhaitent surtout marcher dans des lieux agréables, sans nécessairement tenir compte de la sécurité routière, qui obtient bien souvent de faibles notes à ces mêmes endroits. Devant le défi que représente le vieillissement de la population, une meilleure connaissance des besoins des piétons âgés s’impose, peu importe la taille de la ville, et nos résultats apportent d’intéressantes pistes de réflexion à cet égard.
